Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need to hold my event at a licensed venue or need a special liquor license for my event?
If attendees are required to pay a fee (e.g., registration fees, ticket purchases, conference fees, or donations) and alcohol will be served, the event must either be held at a properly licensed venue or obtain
a Special Liquor License before the event.
If donations or other forms of consideration (e.g., canned goods, coats, school supplies, or other items) are collected while alcohol is served, the event must either be held at a properly licensed venue or obtain a Special Liquor License before the event.
Events with a cash bar must either be held at a properly licensed venue or obtain a Special Liquor License before the event.
Events serving alcohol can only be publicly promoted if held at a licensed venue or with a special liquor license. If not, attendance is restricted to named individuals only, with invitations sent exclusively to specific guests.
Alcohol may only be served by people who have completed a certified training program approved by the State of Michigan Liquor Control Commission. If an outside catering company provides the servers, it is their responsibility to make sure all servers have the proper certification in the State of Michigan.
If alcohol is purchased with university funds, it is university property. According to University policy (SPG 601.29), leftover alcohol cannot be stored or reused. Any unused alcohol must be poured out after the event. We recommend ordering carefully to avoid waste.
Each non-profit organization in Michigan may obtain up to twelve (12) Special Liquor Licenses per calendar year. For the University of Michigan, this annual allotment of twelve licenses is shared among the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses.
UM events involving alcohol are subject to state, University, and local regulations to ensure proper licensing and safe service. If you have any questions, Contact us at UMAlcoholRequests@umich.edu or 734-763-9160
