Activities supporting the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategic planning initiative are underway since President Schlissel announced the university-wide effort last fall. Thank you to everyone who has participated in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion events to date.
We have been gathering a great deal of information on the current overall climate of our organization. For example, we held F&O employee engagement focus groups to discuss workplace climate. The overwhelming theme that emerged was the importance of respecting one another in the workplace. Participants were generally pleased with their workplace and they shared a number of stories about specific environments. The B&F survey and past employee satisfaction surveys have also given us insight into our work climate.
We continue with our planning efforts and will be reaching out to various employee groups to discuss strengths and weaknesses in our organization. This will help us define action items in our strategic plan over the next 5 years.
Over the next few months, leads from B&F units will begin drafting our B&F five-year strategic plan. The plan will consider the following four domains:
- Recruitment, retention, and development
- Promoting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community
- Education and scholarship
There may also be actions specific to F&O, or certain sub-units within our group. The plan will ultimately be submitted to President Schlissel's executive leadership team and incorporated into a comprehensive, university-wide plan. Implementation is set to begin in September 2016.
